Designing Safer Spaces

These CPTED Principles are Proven to be Most Effective When Working Together

Natural Surveillance

The presence of people and lighting are a strong deterrent of crime. Design spaces to create a environment that maximizes observation, intervention and reporting of potential crimes.

Access Control

Controlling who should and should not be in spaces is a strategy to decrease crime. Design spaces to create natural barriers, visual, audible and spatial cues to deter criminal activity.

Territorial Reinforcement

The use of physical attributes that express ownership of a property such as fencing, pavement, signage, and landscaping.

Maintenance

Keeping spaces well-maintained signals positive association, whereas a space that appears dilapidated can signal fear and builds an association with criminal activity.

Social Management

Community members that feel greater ownership over their spaces usually share a common concern for safety, which helps to create an environment that deters crime.
